Five Facts About Eye Donation
This small gift makes a huge difference.
Everyone is a Universal Donor for Corneal Tissue
Unlike organ donation, the blood type of corneal donors does not need to match the blood type of the corneal recipient.
Worldwide Impact
The demand for corneas in the United States is being met and people needing corneal transplants can get them. The resulting international distribution of corneas means it may be possible to eliminate corneal blindness worldwide by 2040.
Eye Donation Continues During COVID-19
LifeSource has continued eye donation services despite the challenges created by COVID-19. This has meant that cornea transplants are still accessible in our service area and nationwide. Additionally, cornea research about the impact of COVID-19 is in progress.
Open Casket Funerals Are Still Possible
All donors are cared for with tremendous respect. The eye donation recovery process does not disfigure or alter the appearance of the deceased. Open casket funerals are still possible for all donors including organ, tissue and eye donors.
Eye Donations Multiply
Only the corneas of the eyes are able to be transplanted to restore vision. However, other sections or the eye are still helpful in surgery and research. The sclera (white of the eye) is used for transplant in oculoplastic and glaucoma surgeries. Eyes can also be used for research and education and the new information we learn can lead to treatments for things like retinal disease and glaucoma.
