Medical Evaluation and Donation Referral Coordinators are critical to starting and guiding the donation process. This requires a unique combination of skills including application of clinical knowledge, critical thinking and empathy.
The vital starting point to sharing the gift of life begins with the management and assessment of referral calls from hospitals. Every call is assessed by a Medical Evaluation and Donation Referral Coordinator to see if there is donation potential, which includes the review of medical records. In cases where there is potential to save lives through donation, a Medical Evaluation and Donation Referral Coordinator would verify donor designation of the patient.
Medical Evaluation and Donation Referral Coordinator’s support grieving families by offering the opportunity to honor their loved one by saving and healing lives through donation. Compassionate care is taken when reviewing medical history and answering family’s questions.
In the Medical Evaluation and Donation Referral Coordinator role, team members use a broad set of skills to:
- Manage communication and review medical records with external healthcare professionals to evaluate a patient’s organ, eye or tissue donation potential.
- Engage and establish rapport with donor families, via phone, presenting the opportunity for donation and supporting them through further medical history discussion.
- Coordinate logistics with other Donation Organizations and Transplant Centers, guiding the transplantation process.
While individuals in the Medical Evaluation and Donation Referral Coordinator role require a unique and varied skill set, there is no “typical” background for this position. People with backgrounds in chiropractic medicine, bereavement, laboratory technology and nursing have all been successful in this role. This diversity of experience strengthens the team and the organization.
