The Ripples of Grief: Encountering Secondary Layers of Loss

Experiencing the death of a loved one begins with the tremendous loss of the presence of that person, but the loss isn’t of that person alone. Death creates ripples of other losses that quickly follow – these are sometimes called secondary losses. Some of these losses are realized right away and sometimes years later an event will reveal a new loss in relationship to your loved one’s death.

You are the expert of your grief journey and many times these secondary losses are experienced in isolation. How do I share how sad I feel during an occasion that other people find to be joyful? During this workshop, we will be exploring secondary losses, validating their relational and emotional impacts, and finding solidarity through the stories each of you bring.

About Anita Fischer, Donation Liaison

Anita Fischer has been a team member with LifeSource for two years and works in hospital development and donor family support. She has a Master’s degree in Pastoral Ministry from St. John’s University and completed Clinical Pastoral Education achieving board certification in chaplaincy. Prior to working for LifeSource, Anita supported patients and families as a hospital chaplain at St. Cloud Hospital through healthcare crises, discernment, loss and grief. She has also presented on topics of grief for various events in Central Minnesota.
